The wind industry is no exception to the multiple handoffs of service contracts that can occur between Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). One of our customers needed to develop a major component exchange procedure and maintenance documentation for an expired service contract of a wind turbine that had been taken over from one OEM by another. However, the customer faced limited access to as-built data, making this task challenging.
Due to limited access to as-built data, the customer faced several challenges including the need to conduct a site scan of the tower and its components such as the machine head and blades. They also needed assistance designing 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) models and measuring critical components such as bolt patterns, cable runs, ladders, key interfaces, etc.
To overcome these challenges, the customer turned to DIS/CREADIS. DIS/CREADIS conducted a comprehensive 2-day site scan of both external and internal components of the tower, including the machine head and blades. After the scan was completed, the team processed the developed scans and designed 3D CAD models to meet the customer's specific requirements. This included providing all Point Cloud data and spherical imagery to the customer.
DIS/CREADIS delivered a successful solution to the customer’s challenges due to their broad experience in the wind industry, particularly in designing wind turbine components and subsystems. The company’s expertise allowed them to offer advisory services and engineering support on documentation, adapters, tools, and similar elements to the customer. The recreated plans also provided the customer with an opportunity to repurpose the information for designing custom tools, such as blade stands.
